What will happen when Californians vote on sports betting initiatives

California is set for the legalization of betting in November. As a result, the decision will make Californians allowed to bet on sports.

The initiative for sports betting is run by the group of Native American gaming which comprises casinos, bingo halls, and other gambling operations that are eligible for the ballot to the California Sports Wagering Regulation and Unlawful Gambling Enforcement Act.

The group targeted the permit for tribal casinos and the state’s four-horse race tracks for sports betting. The effect of the legalization will also make the tribes able to run the tribal casinos and expand their gambling offerings to roulette and dice games.

How the initiative will run

With the backing of the tribes, the initiative will allow adults 21 or older to bet on sports events online. Californians can also bet on non-sports matches like awards shows or gaming competitions.

Also, the legalization will enable people to do online sports betting under the tribe’s name and branding. There is also a requirement to pay all-time $10 million licensing fees with a $1 million renewal fee every five years to the state.

The initiative will also allow betting operators such as Fanduel and DraftKings to offer online sports in the state. They participate in sports betting if they strike a deal with a tribe to access the California market.

Online sportsbooks are required to pay a fee of $100 million once and to make the betting licensed to operate in 10 states or territories, the companies need to pay a $10 million renewal fee every five years. Also, the legalization will require the companies to impose a 10 percent tax.

According to ‘California Solutions to Homelessness and Mental Health Act’ The sports betting initiative will also need to help the homeless by creating interim and permanent housing from the revenues and licensing fees from the betting companies.

Furthermore, 15 percent also would go to Native American tribes that aren’t involved in online sports betting.

Not the first initiative

From a source, this isn’t the first time for California for the legalization initiative.

In 2016, there were two initiatives related to the death penalty, and two about plastic bags, but this time is about sports betting.

In February, four sports betting initiatives did not meet the deal between parties.

However, state legislative leaders Anthony Rendon and Toni Atkins pursue sports betting to be legal even though there will always be multiple ballots for the betting initiatives.

Atkins said that he thinks the ballot will confuse the voters because it was the same thing that was measured.

“I think it’s always confusing to the voters when there’s multiple ballot measures along the same item,” he said.

But, he thinks there always be an opportunity for the negotiation deal after the betting initiative to come real in the state, for Californians.

“If you want to see progress, it’s helpful for it to be more simple so I think maybe there will be an opportunity (to negotiate a deal),” Atkins said.

Gambling in California

The State of California legalizes many forms of gambling, including cardrooms, the California State Lottery, Native American casinos, parimutuel wagering on horse racing, and charitable gaming. Meanwhile, commercial casino-style gaming is banned.

The California State Lottery offers scratchcards and draw games, including the multi-state Powerball and Mega Millions games
